Stretch, Elongate, and Expand
In Tai Chi, stretch, elongate, and expand describe related but different qualities. The spelling is stretch, and the noun forms are stretching, elongation, and expansion.
| Term | Main meaning | Tai Chi example | Chinese |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stretch | Draw tissues or body parts farther apart, creating a feeling of extension or tension. | Gently stretching the muscles around your shoulders. | 伸展、拉伸 |
| Elongate | Increase length along a particular direction or axis. | Letting the spine lengthen, with the crown rising and the pelvis settling. | 延伸、拉長 |
| Expand | Increase space or fullness outward in several directions. | Maintaining a rounded embrace, with the back broad and the elbows softly supported. | 擴展、開展、膨開 |
Stretching emphasizes the action of extending and often the resulting pulling sensation. It does not necessarily mean forcing or stiffening, although excessive stretching can produce both.
Elongation emphasizes length. In 虛領頂勁, for example, “gently lengthen through the spine” is more suitable than “stretch your neck,” which may encourage someone to pull the head upward or tighten the neck.
Expansion emphasizes space and fullness. When holding an embracing posture, imagine the arms and back enclosing a slightly larger sphere. The chest stays comfortable, the shoulders remain relaxed, and the elbows do not lock. This can help convey the outward support associated with 掤, although expansion alone does not fully describe 掤勁.
For teaching, you could say:
“Let the spine lengthen, the back broaden, and the arms expand gently, without stiffening.”
「脊柱延伸,背部開展,雙臂鬆鬆撐圓,不要僵硬。」
Yes—in Tai Chi, you can describe expansion as “elongation in all directions.” It is a useful image, though expansion more precisely means increasing space or fullness outward.
“Elongate along one direction; expand in all directions.”
「延伸是朝一個方向拉長;擴展是向四面八方開展。」
Keep it gentle: 鬆中開展, without forcing or stiffening.
Yes. You could say:
“Expand gently in all directions, allowing the joints to open and the fascia to lengthen, while remaining relaxed.”
「向四面八方輕柔開展,讓關節鬆開、筋膜舒展,同時保持放鬆。」
Here, “open the joints” is a teaching cue for releasing compression and allowing movement—not literally pulling the joints apart. “Allow the fascia to lengthen” describes the intended quality of gentle extension, rather than something you can confirm from sensation alone.
