"Song, Tong, Kong" (松、通、空)—often expanded as "Song, San, Tong, Kong" (松、散、通、空)—is a core internal cultivation concept in Tai Chi, Qigong, mindfulness, and vocal training. It describes a highly advanced state of physical, energetic, and mental relaxation where the body becomes completely open and transparent.
1. Breakdown of the Core Concepts
* Song (松 - Relaxation / Loosening):
• Refers to the deep, thorough relaxation of muscles, joints, and bones from the outside in. Mentally, it means staying natural, fluid, and free of tension or forced effort. This serves as the foundation for all further practice.
* Tong (通 - Flow / Openness / Circulation):
• Building upon the foundation of relaxation, this means the body's Qi (energy), blood flow, and meridians—or the vocal tract in singing—are completely unobstructed. It creates a sense of internal space and effortless connection.
* Kong (空 - Emptiness / Etherealness / No Boundaries):
• The most advanced state of cultivation. The body becomes so deeply relaxed that physical boundaries seem to dissolve. Rigid tension and stray thoughts melt away, leaving the practitioner in a state of ethereal emptiness, perfectly unified with the surrounding environment.
