Regular Movement vs. IST Movement in Tai Chi
Here is a summary of the core differences between standard physical movement and Internal System Training (IST):
Regular Movement
External Focus: Centered on basic physical exercise, moving through the form, warm-ups, and enjoying fresh air or social community.
Benefits: Great for basic physical activity, fresh air, and general wellness, but offers limited long-term depth or transformation.
Relaxation: Often focuses on basic surface relaxation ("relaxing the muscles") without deep structural mechanics.
Practice Continuity: People frequently come and go, as the practice remains surface-level without deeper engagement.
IST (Internal System Training) Movement
Internal Principles & Mind Intent: Driven by active internal alignment, directing the mind/intent, moving energy (Qi), and anchoring a connection to the ground.
Releasing vs. Just Relaxing: Moves beyond generic relaxation into active releasing—opening the joints and releasing tension through proper internal structure.
Cohesion of Moving Parts: Coordinates multiple internal mechanics (sinking, root connection, joint opening) working together as a unified whole.
Two-Person Verification Drills: Incorporates partner work focused on sensitivity, energy flow, and connection rather than winning or losing.
Mindfulness & Present Moment: Anchors you fully in the present, helping quiet worries about the past or future through complete internal awareness.
Lifelong Value: Provides a deep, transformative foundation that deepens continuously over 4–5+ years, encouraging lifelong commitment.
At ArmBridge Tai Chi, all training is directed toward IST movement. In the first few years, you are just scratching the surface—persist, stay determined, and the language and depth of the internal work will naturally unfold over time! 🙏
