Issuing Force and Breathing
Issuing force actually has a lot to do with breathing. In Tai Chi, when you issue force, you often coordinate it with your breath. Generally, when you’re storing or gathering your energy, you might inhale and let the energy and qi sink down to your dantian or the lower part of your body. Then, at the moment of issuing the force, you exhale and release that stored energy in a natural flow, using your intention to guide it. In this way, your breathing acts as a bridge that helps integrate and direct the internal energy, making the whole process of issuing force smoother.
When you issue your internal energy in Tai Chi, you often coordinate it by using your pelvis as a kind of stable base or pivot. Essentially, the tailbone and the pelvis area help anchor your center of gravity and align your lower body so that the internal force can flow smoothly from the ground, through your legs, and out through your arms. In other words, the tailbone is part of that stable core that allows the energy to be issued in a balanced and controlled way.
